Google 創辦人 Larry Page 和 Sergey Brin 自 Novell 延聘了 Eric Schimdt，他曾經以 Novell 董事長兼執行長的身分領導該公司的策略規劃、管理與技術開發。 自從加入 Google 之後，Eric 不斷致力於建立企業基礎架構，以因應 Google 公司快速擴張的需求，並致力於縮短產品研發的周期。 Eric 目前與 Larry 和 Sergey 攜手共同負責管理 Google 的日常營運事宜。 Eric 在 Novell 累積了長達 20 年的經歷，在此期間扮演網際網路策略專家、企業家和重大技術的開發者。他豐富的經歷完全契合 Google 這個快速成長，又具有獨特企業文化之新興搜尋引擎的需求。

在任職於 Novell 之前，Eric 曾經擔任昇陽電腦 (Sun Microsystems, Inc.) 的技術長和公司執行長的職位，負責領導昇陽的獨立平台程式 Java 的研發、並確立了昇陽的網際網路軟體策略。 1983 年加入昇陽電腦之前，他是 Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) 的電腦科技實驗室研究員，另外還分別在貝爾實驗室 (Bell Laboratories) 和 Zilog 擔任相關職務。 Eric 擁有美國普林斯頓大學 (Princeton University) 的電機工程學位、以及加州大學伯克萊分校 (University of California-Berkeley) 的電腦碩士與博士學位。 Eric 因其為全球最成功的網際網路搜尋引擎公司所做的技術開發，在 2006 年被遴選為美國國家工程學院院士 (National Academy of Engineering)。

On Thursday, Jan. 17, the chairman and chief executive officer of Google, Eric Schmidt, will be the featured speaker for part of a lecture series honoring NASA's 50th anniversary. Schmidt will discuss the benefits of technology, innovation and space exploration as part of a luncheon beginning at 12:30 p.m. EST at the Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington. U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon of Tennessee will introduce Schmidt.

Schmidt used his speech in Washington, D.C., to promote the benefits of open architectures and collaboration. He talked about the importance of collaboration between organizations, such as the images from NASA and private satellite providers Google has used to create Google Earth, but also of the benefit to NASA and other government agencies of seeking ideas from the public.
